Kingdom Animalia
In the world of classification they’re our closest relatives, and in this lesson, students will learn plenty about various members of the kingdom to which they belong--Kingdom Animalia.
Student Objectives
- List characteristics of animals that distinguish them from other organisms
- Describe the characteristics of such invertebrate phyla as poriferans, cnidarians, segmented worms, mollusks, echinoderms and arthropods
- Describe the characteristics of such classes of arthropods as insects, arachnids and crustaceans
- Use the concept of notochord to explain why all vertebrates are chordates, but not all chordates are vertebrates
- Describe the characteristics of such classes of vertebrates as jawless fishes, cartilaginous fishes, bony fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals
- Explain the significance of the recent discovery of a living coelacanth
- Describe the characteristics of mammalian orders
- Compare and contrast the echidna and platypus with other mammals
- Identify and describe the characteristics of each taxonomic level for a human being
