Biodiversity and Classification

Lesson 2
Domains Archaea and Bacteria

These domain dwellers comprise the greatest biomass of life on Earth, and in this second Biodiversity and Classification lesson, students will get up close and personal with both run-of-the-mill and extreme bacteria.

Student Objectives

  • Compare and contrast prokaryotes and eukaryotes
  • List basic characteristics of a moneran
  • Compare and contrast monerans, identify their three basic shapes and classify them into groups
  • Describe common diseases caused by certain bacteria and contrast those with beneficial activities and effects of certain bacteria
  • Describe how a bacterium can result in a colony
  • Justify cyanobacteria as monerans, describe their characteristics and defend the importance of cyanobacteria to life on Earth
  • Explain how certain organisms thrive in the darkness of deep oceans where sunlight is absent
  • Give examples of extremophiles and explain why they’re different from typical bacteria
  • Define domain as a level above kingdom and describe the three domains of life as defined by Woese
  • Relate prokaryotes to domains Archaea and Bacteria
  • Relate eukaryotes to Domain Eukaryota
