Kingdom Fungi

in this fourth Biodiversity and Classification lesson, students will learn that some fungi can be our best friends... while others are our worst nightmares.

Student Objectives

  • List characteristics of fungi that distinguish them from other organisms
  • Describe environmental conditions under which fungi thrive
  • Distinguish between the main body of a fungus and its fruiting bodies
  • Relate a mushroom’s gills to its spore-bearing capability
  • Classify gilled mushrooms, bracket fungi and puffballs as basidiomycetes and explain why they all are grouped in the same phylum
  • Give examples of beneficial and harmful fungi and explain their impact on the economy and/or society
  • Give two examples of fungi’s environmental importance
  • Describe the symbiotic relationship that results in a lichen and explain the connection of lichens to air pollution
