Kingdom Fungi
in this fourth Biodiversity and Classification lesson, students will learn that some fungi can be our best friends... while others are our worst nightmares.
Student Objectives
- List characteristics of fungi that distinguish them from other organisms
- Describe environmental conditions under which fungi thrive
- Distinguish between the main body of a fungus and its fruiting bodies
- Relate a mushroom’s gills to its spore-bearing capability
- Classify gilled mushrooms, bracket fungi and puffballs as basidiomycetes and explain why they all are grouped in the same phylum
- Give examples of beneficial and harmful fungi and explain their impact on the economy and/or society
- Give two examples of fungi’s environmental importance
- Describe the symbiotic relationship that results in a lichen and explain the connection of lichens to air pollution
