Biodiversity and Classification

Lesson 5
Kingdom Plantae

Being green is, too, easy if you’re a plant, that is. In this lesson, students are introduced to the “hows” and “whys” of classification within Kingdom Plantae. (May we also suggest Fresh Science Plants for a great survey of our green friends.)

Student Objectives

  • Use taxonomic groupings such as nonvascular and vascular, gymnosperm and angiosperm, and monocot and dicot to differentiate structures and major characteristics of plants
  • Explain why nonvascular plants grow close to the ground
  • Identify both flowers and fruits as seed containers
  • Analyze a chart and conclude that most trees are dicots, and many of the plants that feed humans and other animals are monocots
