Plants
Lesson 3
Photosynthesis and Adaptations
In this third Plants lesson, students investigate the food-making process of photosynthesis. Then, students survey some of the more unique adaptations that help improve a plant’s chances to survive. Finally, the concepts of phototropism and gravitropism are explored.
Student Objectives
- Explain the roles that individual plant parts play with respect to photosynthesis
- Describe the process of photosynthesis; explain how the sun’s energy, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide and water all are involved in the process
- Describe the process of respiration; explain how stored chemical energy, oxygen and water all are involved in the process
- Compare and contrast gravitropism and phototropism
- Give examples of adaptations that enable plants to survive in extreme growing conditions
